Managing Your Time Effectively
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, time management courses were all the rage. Back then, people liked the courses but the issue of time management wasn’t as pressing as it is today.
Staying on top of email is one issue we hear raised a lot. Here are some tips to help you keep in control of email
- Don’t start your day with email.
- Let go of your need to check e-mail every 10 minutes.
- Empty your inbox empty by the end of the day
- Create files where you can put inbox material that needs to be acted on.
- Deal immediately with any e-mail that can be handled in two minutes or less but create a file for mails that will take longer.
- Set a target date to empty your in box. Don't spend more than an hour at a time doing it.
- Turn off automatic send/receive.
- Establish regular times to check your e-mail (say mid and late morning, early and late afternoon).
- Get yourself off unnecessary distribution lists.
- Save time by using only one subject per e-mail; delete extra comments from forwarded e-mail, and make the subject line attention grabbing.
